Poems:
You look upon me with your judgments
With discontent and distrust
Because the ink on my skin you look me with disgust,
Do you even know me as you judge from afar?
About what this ink may cover up and all societal scars.
If you could see beyond the ink and know who I really am
Could you see that I just like you, could you even understand?
This ink is my picture, the window to my soul
It is not the Jagged edge to keep you away,
Do you even care to know?
These things may tell my story of survival, strength and love
They are the words of faith that keep me looking up above,
They are the name of a child that has long since passed
A bird that’s given freedom to a heart for a love that didn’t last.
For judgment is a societal restraint that bind you to conform
It tells you it’s unacceptable and this is not the norm
So when you begin to judge me for the ink on my skin
Maybe it’s you that are not the norm and need to look within
Realize that beauty is in the heart and is more than just skin deep
And then you maybe you can see who I truly am
Not just my ink.
Inked into the skin for the duration of life
Expressing times of great joy or strife
For some there is no special reason
Others create on skin their own personal Eden
With a needle bringing out the pain of the past
Memories of worse times are brought to rest
Memories of better times are immortalized
Getting tattoos with fear of being criticized
