American Traditional was first made known near the end of the 19th century as many performers in circuses or side shows . It gained more popularity in the 1940s as many soldiers returned to home with tattoos. The tattoo artist who is most famous for revolutionizing American Traditional was Norman Collins, aka "Sailor Jerry". it is characterized by bold, black outlines, and a limited color palette. Common images in this style are daggers, eagles, pinups, hearts, panthers, anchors, and roses, and are mostly kept simple. Some artists known for their skill in this style include Herbert Hoffman, Amund Dietztl, Bert Grimm, and Bob Shaw, and more recently, Oliver Peck.
